The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has fined eight electricity distribution companies a total of N628 million for issuing estimated bills above the approved limit for unmetered customers.

The affected DisCos are Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano and Yola.

NERC said the companies failed to comply with the Commission’s approved energy caps for unmetered customers between July and September 2024.

The Commission introduced the billing cap regulation in 2020 to curb exploitation of unmetered customers through arbitrary charges.

According to a statement from NERC, the penalty is in line with Section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023 and represents five per cent of the value of the total overbilling during the third quarter of 2024.

NERC also directed the companies to apply credit adjustments to affected customers by May 15, 2025, to reflect in the April billing cycle.

“The Commission reaffirms its commitment to regulatory compliance and consumer protection within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry,” the statement read.
