Nigeria Oluwafemiayo Clinches Gold, Sets New World Record In Paralympics

Nigeria has ended the 2024 Paris Paralympics games on golden note as Folashade Oluwafemiayo won the gold medal at the +86kg Para Powerlifting division on Sunday.

Oluwafemiayo won the gold medal with a World Record lift of 167 kg, two kg improviement on the previous World Record held by her.

Oluwafemiayo left no one in doubt when she cleanly lifted 157kg, in her first attempt, an effort which is 7kg more than her closest challenger, China’s Xuemi who lifted. 150kg.

Oluwafemiayo lifted 162kg on her second attempt to equal the Paralympics Record in the event set by compatriots, Josephine Orji’s Paralympic Record of 162kg.

She went to break the record with a lift of 166kg to win the gold before she attempted the New Record of 167 kg lift.

It was a good ending to Nigeria quest at the games, going in the final day on Sunday hopes were high on the possibility of winning two gold medals but Loveline Obiji was disqualified in the up to 86kg in the morning session but Oluwafemiayo feat makes up for the sad disqualification of Obiji.

After 11 days of top competition, Nigeria powerful contingents of 23 Athletics won a total of seven medals comprising 2 golds, 3 silver and 2 silver medals.

The event which started on August 28 2024 comes to an end today , Sunday 8 September 2024 with a closing ceremony in France.
