The Association of Practising Professional Project Managers of Nigeria (APPPMON) has expressed concern over the growing number of failed projects in the country, highlighting that Nigeria leads globally in abandoned projects.

The association also revealed that over 13,000 projects by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) are currently abandoned in the region.

During the media launch of its new initiative, ABOKI (APPPMON Body of Knowledge and Innovation), Dr. Inemi Erete Stephen, a senior APPPMON official, stressed the importance of addressing these challenges.

He stated that ABOKI is an innovative solution designed to combat project abandonment, cost overruns, and policy missteps that have plagued Nigeria’s project landscape.

He said, “It is not an exaggeration that over 13,000 projects have been abandoned by the Niger Delta Development Commission. These estimates are just for tangible projects. Today, Nigeria is called a project management graveyard. Today, we see a project landscape dotted with abandoned projects, cost overruns, or policy. Trillions has been lost to failed or abandoned projects.”

According to Stephen, Nigeria’s project management issues have resulted in trillions of Naira being lost, and the country is now referred to as a “project management graveyard.”

He further clarified that ABOKI is a collaborative effort of Nigerian professionals, grounded in research, and tailored to address local realities.

He added, “ABOKI is not a religious, racist, ethnic, tribal or cultural initiative. It is a product of research, interdisciplinary collaboration excelled in every field of human endeavour. It is a response to the negative narrative of failed projects in the country. It is a Nigerian innovation – designed by Nigerians professionals, tested against Nigerian realities.”

This new initiative is expected to offer solutions that will make Nigerian projects more transparent and accountable in the future.
