Nigeria Re-elected To Chair The United Nations Committee On Peacekeeping Operations

During the gathering of the special committees of the United Nation annual meeting, Nigeria was re-elected to Chair the UN committee despite series of hesitations by some key countries to allow Nigeria continue and chair for UN’s most strategic committee.

It was said and confirmed that Nigeria has chaired the special committee on peacekeeping operation from 1972 till date.

While some member countries have expressed concern over the continuous chairing of the committee by Nigeria due to its declining participating in peacekeeping operations, the country was elected by acclamation.

The election which was conducted under the secretary general for the department of peacekeeping operations Herve Ladsous and the chief de cabinet of the UNSG Maria Viotti also saw Argentina elected as first vice chair; Canada, second vice chair; Japan, third vice chair and Poland, fourth vice chair.

Recall that Nigeria’s former minister of environment Amina Mohammed was appointed the deputy secretary general of the United Nations.

Mohammed appointment came after the new UN secretary general António Guterres assumed office at the international organization
