Nigeria Risks Collapse Without Urgent Intervention – Aregbesola

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has declared that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse if urgent political intervention is not taken to address insecurity, hunger, and poor governance.

Aregbesola made the statement on Saturday during the affirmation ceremony in Lagos, where stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and other Lagosians formally joined the party.

Quoting late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s 1983 speech on the inevitability of political change, Aregbesola said the existing political order has failed the people and must give way to a new one that prioritises their welfare.

He said, “Across the nation, the spectre of insecurity looms large as sundry criminals lay siege on the people, making economic and social activities nearly impossible. People now live in mortal fear for their lives and property.

“Medical services, and especially drugs, have become so exorbitant that many of the sick are left waiting to die—unless a miracle comes their way.

“The cost of living is so high that starvation is literally stalking the land. Those who are a little more comfortable are being overwhelmed by requests for assistance from the needy in our society.”

The former Osun governor warned that any government, regardless of its form, that neglects the welfare of its citizens would eventually lose relevance and collapse.

“There is a limit to how much the people can be squeezed and pushed before something eventually gives. This is why our mission is urgent and our intervention has become absolutely necessary. We must act now to save the nation,” he added.

Aregbesola stressed that a political party should be the vehicle that gives the people access to power, noting that whenever any ruling party derails from this mission, the consequences are dire.

He said he was encouraged by the enthusiasm of politicians and citizens from across divides who are joining the ADC in large numbers.
