Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday expressed optimism that Nigeria would be great again, despite the economic challenges confronting the country.
Amosun, who spoke shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir prayer at Lantoro Prayer Ground, Abeokuta, noted that Nigeria’s economy has picked up with President Muhammadu Buhari’s return from medical vacation in London.
He added that Buhari has redoubled his efforts in fighting corruption, insecurity and ensuring economic development, urging Nigerians to continue to support the President in his commitment to put Nigeria on the path of greatness.
The governor admonished Nigerians to continue co-exist peacefully and eschew divisive, hate and violent preaching, adding: “Anybody that knows God must know that peace is very synonymous with God. Such person will not preach violence, hatred and insurgency.
So, I admonish us in Ogun State and indeed Nigeria that once we love one another, once we are united, once we are peaceful, I know Nigeria will be great again.”
Earlier, the Chief Imam of Egbaland, Alhaji Liadi Orunsolu, urged Nigeria to be faithful to God and man.
He told the congregation to be patience and willing to sacrifice for the progress of the country, saying: “Although things are hard, but I believe if we can have patient and willing to sacrifice, things will be normal with time.”
Orunsolu also prayed for Buhari and the country as a whole.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck yesterday in Atikori area of Ijebu-Igbo when a vehicle rammed into Muslims worshippers observing the Eid-El Kabir prayer at a prayer ground, killing two persons and leaving several others seriously injured.
The incident resulted in a mob attack on the driver, who was saved by the quick intervention of policemen at the venue.
A policeman, identified as Joseph Adejuwon, was attached and killed by the angry mob while trying to rescue the driver.
The driver was later arrested by the policemen, while those injured were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The state Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, disclosing that the dead policeman was an orderly to a Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
Oyeyemi added that the driver had been arrested, while the command has commenced investigation into the incident.
