Nigeria Wins First Medal At 2024 Paralympics

Nigeria has secured its first medal at the ongoing 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

The talented athlete from Kwara State, Mariam Eniola Bolaji won the bronze medal in the Para Badminton women’s singles SL3 event on Monday morning.

Mariam Bolaji’s victory came after she decisively defeated Kozyna Oksana of Ukraine, dominating the match with a score of 21-9, 21-9. This win not only marked Nigeria’s first medal of the Games but also highlighted Bolaji’s

Earlier in the competition, Bolaji made headlines by becoming the first African to reach the semifinals in Para Badminton at the Paralympics.

Although she narrowly missed out on a spot in the final after a hard-fought match against China’s Xiao Zuxian, her determination and skill were evident as she battled through to secure the bronze medal.

With Bolaji’s victory, Team Nigeria has now moved up to the 60th position on the Paralympic medal table, providing a much-needed boost to the country’s morale after a disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Nigerian government, which had expressed concern over the nation’s Olympic failures, will undoubtedly welcome this success.

Sports Minister John Enoh has previously called for reforms to improve sports administration in the country, aiming to prevent future disappointments and elevate Nigeria’s performance on the global stage.
