Nigerians Vary Options As DSTV/GOTV Increase Subscription Fees
Following the announcement of an increase in prices on the DSTV and GOtv subscription packages by Multichoice, the increment has stirred reactions from Nigerians.
Multichoice, a major satellite television service in Sub-Saharan Africa, announced an increase in the price of its subscription packages on Wednesday, in a statement signed by the company’s Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe.
According to the statement, the increment would take effect on May 1, 2024.
“We understand the impact this change may have on you – our valued customer, but the rise in the cost of business operations, has led us to make this difficult decision.
“We understand the impact this change may have on you – our valued customer, but the rise in the cost of business operations, has led us to make this difficult decision,” the statement said.
However, the planned increase, reported to be about 25%, has sparked frustration among subscribers who are already grappling with economic challenges. Many subscribers have expressed disappointment and dissatisfaction with the impending price hike, citing concerns about affordability and value for money.
Many have expressed dismay over the timing of the hike, particularly amidst prevailing financial difficulties and limited content offerings. While some users contemplate canceling their subscriptions, others are exploring alternative streaming platforms for entertainment.
In response to the price hike, some subscribers have voiced their intention to explore alternative entertainment options, such as streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showmax, which offer a diverse range of content at competitive prices.
The announcement also reignited calls for a boycott of the Multichoice services as a form of protest against what they perceive as unjustified price inflation.
