NiMet Flags States at Risk Amid Rising Temperatures Across Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide alert as temperatures continue to soar across several states, raising concerns over heat stress and related health risks.
In a post on its X page, NiMet highlighted that residents of Benue, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Niger, Kebbi, Cross River, Oyo, Ogun, and other inland areas of southern states are particularly at risk of extreme heat.
The agency explained that heat stress occurs when the body cannot cool itself effectively. Factors such as high temperatures, humidity, poor ventilation, dehydration, inappropriate clothing, and excessive physical activity can trigger the condition.
If not addressed, heat stress may lead to serious health complications, especially for children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and people with pre-existing medical conditions. Severe cases can result in heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
NiMet urged Nigerians to take practical measures to limit exposure to extreme heat. It advised staying well hydrated, remaining in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces, and using hats, sunshades, and sunscreen when outdoors.
The agency also recommended wearing light, breathable clothing and warned parents to keep infants cool and hydrated, ensuring that children are never left unattended in parked vehicles.
