The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, have faulted the Senate for refusing to reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan after the expiration of her six-month suspension, warning that the action poses a threat to democracy.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in a statement on Wednesday, said the continued barring of the Kogi Central lawmaker from legislative duties has denied her constituents proper representation despite court rulings in her favour.

“The continued barring of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from performing her constitutional duties denies her constituents proper representation and raises concerns about respect for the rule of law,” the statement read.

Ajaero added that the excuse of pending litigation was not in the spirit of democratic accountability and could push the labour movement to mobilise nationwide protests if the matter is not resolved.

In the same vein, Afenifere’s Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, described the Senate’s stance as a dangerous precedent. Speaking in Akure, he said it was unjustifiable to keep the senator out of office after the suspension lapsed on September 6.

“It is difficult to still describe the matter as sub judice after the expiry of the suspension,” Ebiseni said. “The refusal to allow her resumption is unjust not only to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan but also to her constituents, who deserve to be fully represented.”

He stressed that the Senate, as the highest legislative chamber, must avoid setting an example that state assemblies could exploit to weaken constitutional governance.

Both NLC and Afenifere urged the Senate leadership to rescind its decision in the interest of justice, democracy and national stability.
