The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), alongside the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), has called on workers, pensioners, and residents to actively participate in the local government election scheduled for tomorrow.

Chairman of the Joint Labour Movement, Comrade Christopher Arapasope, in a statement made available to OSUN DEFENDER on Friday, emphasised that the participation of workers in the electoral process is crucial to strengthening democracy and ensuring good governance at the grassroots level.

He noted that workers have a significant role to play in shaping policies and governance through the ballot and urged them not to waste the opportunity to make their voices heard.

“In line with our fundamental objectives to protect, defend, and promote the rights, well-being, and interests of all workers, pensioners, trade unions, and the working class in general, we call on all our members and the good people of Osun State to actively participate in the Local Government Election scheduled to hold tomorrow,” he said.

Comrade Arapasope reaffirmed the constitutional mandate of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to conduct the election, citing a recent court ruling that affirmed the legitimacy of the exercise.

“As a responsible Labour Movement, we believe that participation in the electoral process is crucial in fostering a just, democratic, and transparent society. Local government administration plays a vital role in grassroots development and governance, and as such, it is imperative that all eligible voters exercise their franchise to ensure effective representation at the local level,” he added.

The Labour leader further urged all stakeholders, including OSIEC, security agencies, and political parties, to ensure that the election is conducted in a peaceful, free, and fair manner.

He called on workers, pensioners, and the general public to turn out en masse to cast their votes, stating that their participation would help shape the future of governance in Osun State.

“Our vote is our voice, and we must ensure that we actively contribute to the democratic process by electing leaders who will represent our interests effectively at the grassroots level,” he stated.
