NLC President To Be Flown Abroad For Treatment
The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, is reportedly set to be flown abroad for medical treatment for the injuries he sustained in Owerri, capital of Imo state on Wednesday during a protest against the state government.
The NLC president was arrested in Owerri, the capital of Imo State on Wednesday morning during a protest by workers in the state over an alleged ‘serial and habitual abuse and violation’ of their rights by the state government.
Ajaero according to NLC Head of Information, Benson Upah, was picked up from the NLC State Council Secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri and taken to an unknown destination.
Narrating his ordeal at the police custody, Ajaero in a trending video, said God must have taken extra time to create him to sustain the kind of beating he received while in police custody.
He added that the police threatened to drag him to court.
Ajaero in the video said, “If you say interim order, it elapses with time; if the court issues another one, then it’s a different thing. I told them interim order ends within one week or two; they now kept the letter and told me they can prosecute me.
“I told them it’s the same court that can institute a contempt charge; you just can’t start prosecuting me.
Speaking to a news medium on Thursday, the NLC publicity secretary, Benson Upah, said the NLC president could not be treated at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri because of the nature of the injuries he sustained during the scuffle.
