Nnamdi Kanu’s Ailment Not Life-Threatening – NMA
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) panel has declared that the ailment of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening.
The panel, set up by the NMA President on the order of Justice James Omotosho, was tasked with verifying Kanu’s actual health condition following conflicting medical reports presented by both the prosecution and defence teams in his terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to the report submitted to the court on October 13 by the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), and partly read during Thursday’s hearing, the panel confirmed that Kanu is medically fit to stand trial.
Justice Omotosho, relying on the report and noting that there was no objection from either side, ruled that the trial should proceed.
The judge granted Kanu six consecutive days, starting from October 23, to open and close his defence.
Justice Omotosho also approved an oral request by Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), for his legal team to hold a private consultation with their client outside the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Agabi had argued that the team feared its discussions with Kanu could be recorded or monitored by the DSS.
The court directed that the private consultation be held inside the courtroom between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on October 22, with only Kanu and his lawyers present.
The trial is expected to resume on October 23.
