NNPP Labels Kwankwaso A Betrayer, Says He Has Lost Grip On Kwankwassiya Movement
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has accused its former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, of betrayal, insisting he no longer commands the loyalty of the Kwankwassiya Movement.
This follows Kwankwaso’s criticism of some NNPP members who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), branding their actions as treacherous.
He made the remarks at his residence on Miller Road, Kano, during a meeting with Kwankwassiya members from Takai Local Government Area.
However, in a statement issued on Monday by the NNPP National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major, the party declared that Kwankwaso lacks the authority to speak for them, having been expelled alongside his associates, including Dr Ahmed Ajuji.
Major said the Kwankwassiya Movement was never a political party but a group that joined the NNPP before the 2023 elections when Kwankwaso emerged as the presidential flagbearer.
“It is laughable that someone who tried to hijack the NNPP is accusing others of betrayal,” Major stated.
He said the party severed ties with Kwankwaso and his group after the elections, adding that members of the movement were free to join any political party of their choice.
“Kwankwaso, who once attempted to bite the fingers that offered him the presidential ticket on trust, now has no control over the Kwankwassiya movement,” he said.
He added that the wave of defections to the APC by Kwankwaso’s loyalists clearly signals that he has lost grip of the movement.
“Kwankwaso’s political career ended with his expulsion from the NNPP. He should consider forming his own party or look for another one to hijack,” Major said.
He also cited the recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which dismissed a suit filed by Kwankwaso’s loyalists challenging the legitimacy of the current NNPP leadership. Justice M.A. Hassan ruled that the matter was an internal party affair and outside the jurisdiction of the court.
Major further advised Kwankwaso to consider returning to the APC as an ordinary member under the leadership of Senator Abdullahi Ganduje rather than attack defectors.
