NNPP Warns Nigerians, INEC To Reject Kwankwasiya-Led Congresses
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Monday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nigerians to disregard purported congresses by the Kwankwasiya Movement led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing the move as unconstitutional.
In a statement by the party’s National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, the NNPP said its court-ordered congresses have already been held and concluded.
The Kwankwaso-led group had written to INEC announcing plans to hold fresh congresses and a convention for the NNPP from November 25 to January 2026.
The party, however, stressed that the group has no authority to conduct congresses on its behalf, noting that the Memorandum of Association signed ahead of the 2023 presidential election had long expired.
The NNPP further noted that Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and some members of the Kwankwasiya group remain expelled for anti-party activities.
“We are still amazed that a man of Kwankwaso’s standing will insist on hijacking a party that gave him a soft landing to contest the 2023 presidential election for free,” Olaposi said.

The party called on INEC to uphold its responsibilities by recognising the authentic leadership of the NNPP and uploading it on its official website.
“The Abia State High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court confirmed the expulsion of Kwankwaso and his group from NNPP’s internal democratic processes. It is most unfortunate that Kwankwaso continues to act in defiance of court judgments,” the statement added.
NNPP also expressed disappointment over INEC’s inaction, recalling that past letters urging compliance with court rulings went unanswered.
“INEC, as an umpire, cannot afford to sit on the fence on matters of urgent importance and the peace of society. We remain concerned that attention is being given to groups seeking to create crisis in our democracy,” Olaposi said.
The party concluded by directing its members to disregard the “fake congresses and conventions” and appealed to INEC to ensure that laws are obeyed to sustain democracy in Nigeria.
