The National Orientation Agency (NOA), on Thursday, said it has begun sensitization and awareness creation on the National Values Charter.
The Agency noted that the initiative is aimed at bringing back the ideals and values for which Nigerians were known.
The Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed this during a media briefing at the agency’s office in Osogbo, Osun State Capital.
Issa-Onilu who was represented by the Director, Reform Coordination and Service Improvement, National Headquarters, Abuja, Mrs Olubukola Olorunfemi, said the charter is embedded in the ‘Nigerian Promise’ and the ‘Citizens Code’.
She added that the federal executive council had approved the mandatory inclusion of the charter as part of the curriculum of schools at both the basic and post-basic schools.
She said, “The National Values Charter, which will be unveiled soon by the President, is a blueprint for promoting core values that will guide our actions and decisions. Values are principles, beliefs, and ideologies shaping us as individuals.

“The National Identity project becomes highly important to redirect all Nigerians, irrespective of class, ethnicity, and religion, to the ideals and values for which we were traditionally known and used to build our societies and their institutions.
“This charter is a mutual commitment of the country and citizens to the national cause whereby Governinent at all levels must fulfill its basic non-negotiable promises in return for commitments from the citizens.
“The charter is embedded in the ‘Nigerian Promise’ and the ‘Citizens Code’ which is a set of seven promises of the country to her citizens and a set of seven obligations of the citizens to the country.
“The Federal Executive Council has approved the mandatory inclusion of the charter as part of the curriculum of schools at both the basic and post-basic schools. These new syllabuses will comprise key value orientation topics.
“The council also approved that the teaching of the national values charter be made mandatory component of pre-resumption retreat for Federal Executive Council members, the National Assembly members, the Judiciary and other government appointees.”Compose Message
