‘Nobody Is Above The Law’ – EFCC Breaks Silence On Tompolo’s Birthday Naira Abuse Video

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally responded to mounting public pressure regarding a viral video showing former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, allegedly involved in naira abuse at his recent birthday celebration.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the statement came hours after Nigerians took to social media demanding equal treatment for Tompolo, following the agency’s previous clampdowns on celebrities and socialites who were caught spraying the naira at public events.

The outrage stemmed from a viral clip shared on X by user Harrison A, tweeting as #harreceipts, which captured moments from Tompolo’s 54th birthday party held in April.

In the footage, the ex-Niger Delta agitator is seen dancing as another individual showers him with crisp ₦1,000 notes, in what appeared to be a clear breach of the Central Bank Act that forbids the abuse of Nigerian currency.

OSUN DEFENDER gathered that several Nigerians questioned why the EFCC had been swift in prosecuting entertainment figures such as Bobrisky, Cubana Chief Priest and others, yet appeared silent over Tompolo’s case until the matter went viral.

“Tompolo should not be treated differently. Spraying money is a criminal offence. If Bobrisky and others can be prosecuted, so should he,” a Lagos-based rights advocate, Samuel Oladeji said.

Responding to the demands by netizens, EFCC in a post on its official X handle on Monday said: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
