Nollywood Mourns Veteran Actress Nkechi Nweje’s Passing
The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actress Nkechi Nweje, who passed away on Friday, after a brief illness.
Sources close to the actress revealed that she had been battling an undisclosed illness and was believed to be recovering before her sudden demise.
The news has sent shockwaves through Nollywood, with colleagues and fans taking to social media to express their grief.
Veteran actress Rita Edochie shared a solemn post on Instagram, writing, “This world is really not our home.”
Actor Buchi Dortmund also paid tribute, saying, “Today, my heart is heavy with sorrow as I say goodbye to my dear sister. Words cannot capture the depth of this pain.”
Actress Asa Ikuku described Nweje as a “blessing” to Nollywood, while producer Stanley Ontop, a close friend, confirmed her passing, calling her “one of our vibrant actresses.”
Many others, including Destiny Etiko and Anita Joseph, joined in mourning her loss.
Nkechi Nweje, known for her memorable roles in My Brother’s Wife (2019), Ritual of Vengeance (2021), and Sorrows of Nene (2014), was a beloved figure in Nollywood.
Just a week before her passing, she premiered her latest film, The Debt, on YouTube.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Azuibuike Nweje, and their six children.
