Nurse Sentenced To Life For Killing 10 Patients To Ease Workload
A 44-year-old nurse in Germany was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday after being found guilty of murdering 10 patients and attempting to kill 27 others.
The offences occurred between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Würselen, near Aachen.
Investigators revealed that the nurse deliberately injected mostly elderly patients with high doses of sedatives and painkillers, including morphine and midazolam, intending to reduce his workload during night shifts.
The court ruled that the severity of his actions justified a life sentence, meaning he will not be eligible for early release after 15 years, as sometimes allowed in Germany.
Trained as a nurse in 2007, he had worked in multiple hospitals, including facilities in Cologne, before joining the Würselen hospital in 2020.
Prosecutors noted he showed no remorse, suffered from a personality disorder, and lacked empathy for his patients.
Authorities are exhuming bodies to determine whether there are additional victims, and further legal proceedings may follow.
