Reports have it that a Nigerian Army personnel, Lance Corporal Sanni Mohammed, has been arrested with two boxes containing about 2,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
He was arrested by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and handed over to the police as he was about to board a bus to Abuja on Monday.
The soldier had called in sick, obtained a sick permit from his base at the 198 Special Forces Battalion, Damasak town in Borno State, before the arrest.
When interrogated by the police, Mr Mohammed claimed he sourced the ammunition from a broken-down vehicle in his unit.
Medical reports and a 3-day excuse duty were found on him upon his arrest.
A military source said the army is waiting on the police to hand over the soldier to it for a detailed investigation of the matter.
