Medical Doctors and other health practitioners who are members of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) deployed to the State of Osun have been charged to ensure they take appropriate steps to be protected from communicable diseases like Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM).
This charge was given by the Executive Secretary of the State of Osun Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Kayode Ogunniyi while addressing members of the 2017 Batch B, Stream 1 who are health practitioners at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Ede during the NYSC For CSM Immunization campaign.
Ogunniyi stressed the importance of the NYSC health practitioners to always do the needful which include getting immunised against Meningitis.
According to him, “Health practitioners were always amongst the vulnerable, especially during the Ebola and Lassa fever epidemics which ravaged the country some years back.
“Doctors and other health workers were more affected and therefore, as health professionals protect others, they should also protect themselves”.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ogunniyi who personally vaccinated some corp members called on others who had not availed themselves the opportunity to do so, as the exercise was free after which they would be duly given a certificate indicating that they had been cleared.
He also advised NYSC members to aspire to involve themselves in useful endeavours so that at the end of their service to the nation, they would have something worthwhile to call an achievement.
In his response, Assistant Director, Corp Welfare and Health, NYSC Osun State; Chief Tunde Faderin, revealed that the scheme had gone far because of the exigency of the time.
Faderin revealed that corp members were trained on skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme.
“After camp, corp members are encouraged to continue their training with their mentors which are available in all the local government areas.
“Unlike the NYSC camp where the training is free for one week, outside the camp, they will be required to pay a token for their post camp training.
“The aim of this programme is to make corp members creators of wealth and jobs and not to conclude the national service and start searching for jobs”.
