The Federal Government has announced a significant policy change regarding the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, mandating that corps members will henceforth be posted only to roles aligned with their fields of study.
This was disclosed by the Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, during an interview on the Mic On podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.
Olawande expressed his commitment to ensuring that the NYSC scheme becomes a more productive and impactful experience for Nigerian graduates.
Recalling his own service year in Gombe, where he was posted to teach despite being a civil engineering graduate, the minister criticised the longstanding mismatch in postings, which he described as counterproductive to the professional development of corps members.

“I’ve made a ministerial order and I’m serious about it. No corps member should be posted to where it is not their area of study. It will never happen again. I can tell you for free,” Olawande declared, emphasising that his directive would be strictly enforced.
He assured Nigerians that the new policy would provide corps members with meaningful experiences, ensuring the scheme positively impacts their careers and prepares them for the workforce.
The minister reiterated his commitment to reforming the NYSC scheme, adding that the service year must transcend being a mere national obligation to becoming a year of skill acquisition and professional development.
“We must do the right thing. If we don’t do it now, there is no time we can do it again. It must be a productive year. Not just to serve my fatherland but to serve in a way that affects one’s life positively within that year,” Olawande stated.
Olawande, however, expressed confidence that with the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the policy would be fully implemented, marking the beginning of a transformative era for the NYSC scheme.
