OAU Fresh Students Lament Over Postponement Of Matriculation
Newly admitted students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State have expressed disappointment on Wednesday following the indefinite postponement of the 2023/2024 matriculation ceremony.
The event, initially slated for Thursday, December 5, 2024, was postponed just a day before the scheduled date.
A statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Mr. Adetunji Bakare, clarified that a new date would be announced in due course.
The statement reads: “The Matriculation Ceremony that was purportedly scheduled to hold on Thursday, 5th December 2024, has been postponed indefinitely.
“The University Administration is working round the clock to ensure that a new date is fixed, and members of the University Community will be communicated as appropriate.
“This information is for all members of the University Community and other stakeholders in the Matriculation Ceremony.”

The announcement has sparked discontent among the newly admitted students, with many expressing frustration over the last-minute notice, which they described as disruptive and inconsiderate.
In an interview with Osun Defender, Adedeji Temilola, a student from the Department of Geology, voiced her dissatisfaction. “I am really fed up,” she lamented, highlighting the emotional toll the abrupt change has had on her and other students.
Similarly, Adebayo Samuel, a student from the Department of Economics, shared his frustration. “I had invited my family members all the way from Lagos for this ceremony. This last-minute postponement is unfair and highly disappointing,” he said.
Another student, Ifeoma Okonkwo from the Department of English, criticized the university’s communication process. “The lack of proper planning and timely information is disheartening. We are starting to lose confidence in the administration,” she stated.
The university administration has yet to provide specific reasons for the postponement, leaving students and stakeholders eager for clarity on the rescheduled date.
