Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has taken a surprising hit in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 university rankings, slipping significantly while two other prominent institutions, Osun State University, UNIOSUN and Adeleke University, were notably absent from the list.
THE, a respected global ranking of universities, evaluates institutions across 18 indicators, including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry impact, and international outlook. The 2024 edition analyzed 1,907 universities from 108 countries, providing insights into how higher education institutions are performing on the world stage.
Among Nigerian universities, Covenant University (CU) emerged as the top performer, ranked within the 800-1000 band globally. CU outshone both private and public institutions, including the University of Ibadan (UI), which ranked alongside Covenant within the same global bracket.
Other notable mentions in the list include the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
In a notable absence, both UNIOSUN (Osun State University) and Adeleke University, institutions that have shown promise in recent years, did not make it into the rankings.
