Students of Obafemi Awolowo University have raised concerns over the poor state of some of the lectur halls of the institution.
The students alleged the school authority of negligence, threatening to mobilize a campus‑wide sit‑in if the management fails to meet their demands.
This was contained in a letter issued by the Great Ife Students’ Union Welfare Officer, Shuaib-Osunleke Musiab, on Thursday and addressed to the school management.
The letter followed an incident which occurred earlier in the week were two students reportedly collapsed inside an overcrowded lecture room.
According to the Welfare Officer, the affected students were immediately rushed to the Health Centre and have since been stabilised, but the Union says the tragedy is a direct result of the university’s failure to provide safe and breathable classroom environments.

”This is a constant reminder that our learning environment is being sacrificed on the altar of administrative apathy. Classrooms have turned into hazardous spaces where ventilation is poor, human bodies are squeezed far beyond safety limits,” the Union said, emphasizing that students have endured weeks of discomfort.
In its demands to the Vice-Chancellor, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, and all relevant authorities, the Union called for immediate action including a compulsory inspection of all learning spaces, enforcement of occupancy limits, installation of fans or air-conditioning units, placement of first-aid boxes in all major lecture theatres, and public report from the Vice-Councellor of the institution detailing the corrective measures taken.
The Union also warned that failure to address these issues within a reasonable time-frame would leave students with no option but to initiate a campus-wide sit-in, effectively shutting down academic activities until their welfare is prioritised.
”We will not stand idle while our Students’ health is jeopardized. Our learning environment must be safe, and our welfare is non-negotiable.” the statement read. “
The Union further urged students, staff, and concerned members of the academic community to stand in solidarity as it pushes for immediate reforms aimed at preventing future health emergencies on campus.
”Let there be no doubt, the Union will defend the rights of every student and will not be silenced,” the statement concluded.
