The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, OAUTH, has alerted the public to the outbreak of viral haemorrhagic fever in the country.
In a release dated February 23rd, 2024, the members of staff and heads of the departments of the OAUTH, stated that Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) are highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral infections that spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as blood, saliva, urine and vomitus, of infected individuals. The symptoms include a high fever, fatigue, vomiting, muscle aches and bleeding from various parts of the body.
According to the release, “The management, with great concern, has deemed it highly imperative to inform all members of staff about the recent outbreak of Viral Haemorrhagic Fever due to Lassa fever within our nation, with resultant fatalities. It is crucial that we take immediate precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of staff, patients, relations, visitors, clientele, et cetera.
“Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) are highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral infections which spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as blood, saliva, urine and vomitus, of infected individuals. The symptoms include high fever, fatigue, vomiting, muscle aches and bleeding from various parts of the body.
“In view of the above, management hereby urges all members of staff to be vigilant and adhere strictly to all precautionary measures, such as frequent handwashing, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), strict compliance with infection prevention/control protocol, maintenance of hygiene practices, proper disposal of all forms of wastes and to also avoid close or unnecessary contact with individuals showing symptoms among others.
