Obama Condemns Killing Of Trump Ally Charlie Kirk In Utah
Former United States President, Barack Obama, has condemned the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
In a statement via his official X handle, on Wednesday, Obama described the shooting as “despicable violence” that has no place in democracy. He also extended condolences to Kirk’s wife and their two young children.
He wrote, “We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.”
Kirk, 31, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump and co-founder of the largest conservative youth movement in the US, was addressing a campus gathering when he was struck by a bullet from an elevated position.
Witnesses said he collapsed as blood spurted from his neck before he was rushed away on a stretcher. Authorities described the incident as a “targeted attack.”
Utah’s Department of Public Safety confirmed that the shooter fired from a rooftop overlooking the courtyard where the event held. Two men were briefly detained but later released after questioning. Another man, George Zinn, was charged with obstruction but not linked directly to the shooting.
Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk.” He blamed “radical left rhetoric” for the tragedy and vowed to track down those responsible.
“My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organisations that fund it and support it,” the president declared in a televised address from the Oval Office.
