Obi Vs Adeyanju: Not Every Thought Belongs Online – Shehu Sani
Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has urged Nigerian youths to exercise restraint in their social media expressions, warning that reckless posts could attract costly legal battles.
His caution comes as reports circulate that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is considering legal action against activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory statements.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Sani reminded young Nigerians that freedom of expression carries legal responsibility.
He recalled how, during his time in the Senate, he was dragged before five different Kaduna High Courts by the then-governor of the state.
“My advice to young comrades on social media is not to be afraid of expressing your views, but always keep money to pay your lawyers in case you are dragged to the courts,” he said.
The former lawmaker further cautioned that many rights groups who promise legal support often disappear once cases become prolonged.
“Some people slander and insult others online because they don’t know the cost of going to court. Lawyers are learned men but not cheap men. Most rights groups will say they will defend you but will disappear the moment the case drags on in court,” he added.
He also noted that while platforms like Facebook encourage users to share what is on their minds, not every thought should be posted publicly.
“The Facebook usually asks ‘what’s on your mind’. It’s not everything that is in that your mind that you should post,” he warned.
