Obidient Movement Says PDP Can’t Woo Peter Obi Amid Party Crisis

The Obidient Movement has dismissed efforts by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to woo former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying the party’s unresolved internal crisis weakens any attempt to bring him back ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, spoke to Vanguard on Wednesday in Abuja, responding to reports of planned consultations by PDP leaders.

“Well, they are making overtures to him, but the problem is that the party has issues at the moment,” Yunusa said.

He questioned the logic of inviting a key political figure to join a party struggling with internal disputes, noting that such instability raises serious doubts about the PDP’s coherence and direction.

“And so if you say you are making an overture for him to go back, where exactly? Where there are problems, how do they manage that? These are the issues you have to consider,” he added.

The comment comes after PDP South-South Chairman, Emmanuel Ogidi, confirmed that a faction of the party is planning to engage both Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ogidi said the outreach will involve Obi, now an African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader, alongside other prominent opposition figures.

While the PDP faction sees the move as a step to rebuild and strengthen the opposition, Yunusa warned that the party’s internal instability could undermine such efforts and reduce its appeal to high-profile politicians ahead of the next general elections.
