In its bid to ensure agricultural development and improve healthcare delivery, the Caretaker Management Committee of the Obokun Local Government has distributed cocoa seedlings to farmers and drugs to health centres across all towns in the Local Government Area.
The Executive Secretary of the council, Alhaji Oladiran Ashaolu, during the distribution of the materials on Tuesday said while, the distribution of the cocoa seedlings was aimed at boosting cash crop production in agriculture, the distribution of drugs was intended to improve health care services among the people.
He said, “the decision to distribute cocoa seedlings was arrived at after due consultations considering the fact that agriculture is the largest source of employment in the council area”.
According to him, “No doubt, agriculture remains the largest potential source of employment in our country’s economy and it is no gainsaying that for agriculture to play this role effectively, there is the need for increased public investment in the sector with the ultimate objective of making it the backbone of our economy”.
He added that his administration was following the footsteps of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration on its commitment to agriculture and primary health care system.
He urged the farmers to be conscious of the global economic situation which demands that the people must show interest in the development of agriculture to ensure food security and growth of economy.
Hon. Ashaolu also advised the entire farmers to take proper care of the seedlings, so that in few years to come they can have course to smile, just as he appealed to youths in the country to engage in farming, with a view to reducing unemployment rate.
The council boss also promised that his administration would improve the health facilities in the council better than how its administration had met it.
According to him, “In a bid to improve our health facilities better than we had met it, my administration has purchased drugs of considerable amount which is being distributed to all our health centres in the council area today”.
He then solicited support for the administration of Aregbesola by being more active in the payment of taxes and other levies.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Kunle Ige commended the caretaker management committee for embarking on good gesture to relief farmers in the council and to improve the health care services as well.
One of the beneficiaries of cocoa seedlings, Oladejo Ojo commended the Executive Secretary for the good steps he took and urged him to continue with it.
Some other farmers, Abdul Kolade, Michael Akinola and Ibiyemi Yinusa lauded the Executive Secretary for the kind gesture.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Fadaka Felicia from Idoko Primary Healthcare Centre, Amola Taiwo from Ibokun and Paul Fajuyi from Ibontoro, appreciated what the Executive Secretary has done for the health centre across the local government and urged him not to relent.
Amongst the dignitaries who graced the occasion were; Hon. Isaac Kehinde, the Council Manager; members of the Caretaker Management Committee; Obokun Local Government Cocoa Board Chairman, Elder Akinwale Lasun, among others.
Also present are the Oba’bokun of Ibokun, Oba Festus Awogboro; Alada of Ada-Owode, Oba I.I. Adesola; Ajaregbe of Ijaregbe, Oba E.A. Olutimo and Ajalolu of Ilase-Ijesa.
