A police constable, Prince Chima, had been arrested for allegedly threatening a civilian with an AK-47 rifle in Benin City, the Edo state capital.
The incident happened in the government-reserved area of Benin City following an argument between the officer and an unidentified youth.
The youth was alleged to have insulted the officer.
His arrest was announced by the Edo State Police Command.
In a viral video, the officer was seen threatening some people in their residence with an AK-47 during the misunderstanding.
The commissioner, Mr Funsho Adegboye, ordered the arrest and orderly room trial of the officer after he was identified in the viral video, according to the command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor.
He said the commissioner, however, called for a discreet investigation into the matter and arrested the office identified as a Police Constable attached to the Department of Operatives (DOP) while using technical intelligence,
“During interrogation, the officer said he was on duty at the NIPCO Petrol Station along Siloko Road, Benin City, when a certain young man who came to charge his phone had an altercation with him and the man called him a smelling Policeman.
He said when the man left the petrol station for his residence, after the interventions of the manager of the petrol station, followed him home.
“The CP has directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad section to investigate the erring policeman to ascertain his mental health status through the command medical officer and commit him to a disciplinary process known as orderly room trial,” he said.
