This is in partnership with Rotary International District 9110 Nigeria, Rotary International 3020 India and Rotary International 3610 South Korea.
The State Commissioner for Health, Mr. Babatunde Ipaye, who stated this while flagging off the programme at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, explained that the aim of the free medical surgery was to give succor to citizens of the state who could not afford the cost of the operation in Nigeria or travel abroad for medical attention.
“Such surgery usually costs so much which most of our people, especially those living in rural areas and the aged, might not be able to afford, government,” he said
The commissioner, however, asked the Federal Government to do the needful and fix the health sector in order to reduce the rate people travel abroad for medical tourism.
“We are attending to about 400 beneficiaries free of charge and you know how much it would cost in dollar or pound if these people were to travel to the US or UK for such treatment. This is the reason we are calling on the government of the day to pay attention to the health sector so as to reduce money spent on medical treatment abroad,”
Earlier in his speech, Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jagdeep Kapoor, said the free surgical mission would be carried out by seven India Medical Doctors, adding that Ogun State was chosen by Rotary International of Nigeria to benefit from the exercise.
The Elepe of Epe and President, Remo Traditional Council, Oba Adewale Osinderu, appreciated Government for the giant strides recorded in the health sector and for bringing the programme to the door step of the less privileged in the society.
“Don’t you know how much it cost for traveling abroad for medical check-up talk less of going for medical surgery? At least 400 people will benefit from the surgical mission. We thank the State government and the Rotary International for deeming it fit to come up with this programme,” the traditional ruler said.
Other patients to be attended to are those with cataract, gynecological diseases such as myoma, uterine prolapse, ovarian cyst, dental restoration, gastric bypass, caesarean section and those that have breast mass.
