The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Ogun State chapter, have issued a fresh seven-day ultimatum to Governor Dapo Abiodun, urging him to address their repeated demands concerning the implementation of local government autonomy and the poor state of affairs across the 20 local government areas of the state.

The new ultimatum which was issued on Tuesday, followed the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum earlier issued by the union two weeks ago.

The local government workers warned that the governor’s failure to address their demands within the next seven days would leave them with no choice but to embark on industrial action.

The NULGE President in the state, Comrade Adefesobi Adebayo, disclosed this during a briefing held at the union secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The union has in a communiqué addressed to the governor, lamented what it described as the state government’s undue interference in the running of local government administration.

The union stated that it regretted that, despite the Supreme Court judgment, the pronouncement by the National Assembly, and the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abiodun had yet to implement full local government autonomy.

It said this had resulted in local governments operating without basic furniture, poor infrastructure, and unmotivated workers labouring under difficult conditions, all of which had negatively affected administration at the grassroots level.

Among other demands, the union also called for the cancellation of the contributory pension scheme, accusing the government of reneging on its commitments, particularly regarding the backlog of unremitted pension savings.
