Okonjo Iweala Advocates Adoption Of AI In Decentralising Electricity
Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called for a decentralised approach to electricity supply in Nigeria, emphasising its necessity for adoption and advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the 10th convocation ceremony of African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Abuja, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the transformative role of AI in socio-economic development.
She stressed the crucial need for constant and reliable electricity to ensure widespread internet access, which is essential for upskilling Nigerians in AI.

“Power outrage and constant interpretation might prove a more challenging constraint in Nigeria and other African countries to internet access and AI adaptation than anything else,” she said.
She commended organisations who are exploring hydro and solar energy solutions noting the importance of mobilising the necessary 200 million to fund the project.
The former Minister of Finance also sought the need for robust regulatory framework to manage the adaptation of AI responsibly, expressing concerns over sovereignty and privacy, particularly as African economies rely heavily on foreign technology providers.
