Okonjo-Iweala Reappointed WTO Director-General

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has reappointed Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term.

The reappointment, which takes effect from September 1, 2025, was approved at a special General Council meeting held on Friday.

In an official statement shared via its X account, the WTO confirmed that member nations unanimously agreed to extend Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure, citing her outstanding leadership since assuming office in March 2021.

Notably, she remains the first African and the first woman to head the global trade body.

“Her second four-year term, which was approved at a special General Council meeting, will begin on 1 September 2025,” the statement added.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala had earlier expressed her desire to continue leading the organisation during a General Council meeting on September 16, following strong support from 58 member countries of the African Group of WTO.

The formal process for nominations, which commenced on October 8 and concluded on November 8, saw her emerge as the sole candidate for the position.

Announcing her reappointment, Petter Olberg, Chair of the WTO General Council, stated that no other nominations were received by the deadline.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, who took office in 2021, has been commended for her efforts in fostering global trade reforms, promoting inclusivity, and addressing critical challenges faced by member nations.

Her reappointment is seen as a testament to her commitment to strengthening the WTO and ensuring equitable trade practices worldwide.
