Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has inaugurated a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

The committee, which is chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, will be formally inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.

Other notable members of the committee include Anslem Ojezua as deputy chairman and Frank Edebor as secretary. The team also boasts eminent personalities such as Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, and Patrick Idiake, among others.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo stated that the committee’s formation aligns with his administration’s commitment to ensuring probity and accountability in governance.

According to Itua, despite several requests for a comprehensive account of assets and liabilities under Obaseki’s government, the information provided was deemed insufficient and fragmented.

“It is imperative that we ascertain the true state of affairs left behind by the previous administration. This is not only to hold past leaders accountable but also to set Edo State on a clear path of sustainable development,” Itua stated.

The governor’s action follows mounting concerns over the management of state assets during Obaseki’s tenure. Reports from permanent secretaries across various ministries had painted a troubling picture of alleged mismanagement and irregularities, prompting the government to act swiftly.

A government insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the findings from the committee could potentially trigger further investigations and legal actions if discrepancies are uncovered.

“Governor Okpebholo is determined to prioritize the interests of the Edo people. This exercise will ensure that accountability remains at the heart of governance in the state,” the source added.

Political watchers believe this development could send shockwaves through the Edo political landscape, as many have long suspected that the Obaseki administration left behind more questions than answers.

The 14-member committee includes respected figures across various fields, a move aimed at ensuring objectivity and credibility in the investigation. Members such as Patrick Obahiagbon and Taiwo Akerele are expected to bring their wealth of experience to bear on the assignment.

The committee’s mandate is clear: to conduct a thorough review of all assets, liabilities, and financial transactions during Obaseki’s administration. The findings, once submitted, could redefine governance in Edo State and set a benchmark for future administrations.

The Edo State Government has assured citizens that the process will be transparent and devoid of political vendetta. “This is not about witch-hunting; it is about setting the records straight and ensuring that the resources of Edo State are managed responsibly,” the statement emphasized.
