Ola Aina Emerges Europe’s Best Defensive Ball-Winner
Nottingham Forest defender, Ola Aina, has been ranked as the best ball-winner in defensive areas across Europe’s top five leagues, according to statistics from WhoScored.
The 28-year-old full-back has been an integral figure for Forest this season, featuring in over 2,500 minutes across all competitions and delivering his most impressive campaign at the top level.
A report released by the club on Tuesday highlighted Aina’s dominance in defensive duties, stating: “Aina has won the ball back in defensive areas a full 13 times more than any other player, putting him top of the list across the continent.”
His solid defensive contributions have played a vital role in Nottingham Forest’s backline, significantly aiding goalkeeper Matz Sels in securing 12 Premier League clean sheets – the highest in the division this season and the joint-most of Aina’s career.
Beyond his ball-winning ability, Aina has also proven to be a key disruptor in opposition attacks, registering 30 interceptions in the 2024/25 campaign. This feat places him as Forest’s best in the category and joint-26th across the Premier League.
The former Chelsea man further showcased his defensive brilliance in Forest’s recent 1-0 victory against Manchester City, where his crucial tackle on Omar Marmoush led to the match-winning goal.
In the heated encounter against City, Aina’s defensive resilience was evident. He won four ground duels against Jérémy Doku, made three clearances—including two headed ones—and recovered possession four times to keep Forest’s defensive shape intact.
