Olubadan: Ladoja Begins Coronation Rites
The Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, on Monday began the traditional and religious rites leading to his official coronation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The rites commenced with interdenominational prayers held at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, where Christian, Muslim, and traditional leaders offered prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in the ancient city.
The event was attended by the Balogun of Ibadan-designate, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola; the Otun Balogun, Oba Kolawole Adegbola; Ashipa Balogun, Oba Dauda Azeez; the Ekaarun Olubadan, Oba Adebayo Akande; and several dignitaries from across Ibadanland.
Oba Ladoja is scheduled to receive the staff and instrument of office on Friday, September 26, at a grand coronation ceremony to be held at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, with President Bola Tinubu expected to lead other dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Speaking on the process, Oba Ajibola assured that Ladoja’s emergence as Olubadan would be rancour-free, unlike his predecessor’s ascension, which generated concerns about succession.
He described the stool as unique and divinely structured, noting that Ibadan’s rotational system between the Otun and Balogun lines leaves no room for disputes.
“This time around, there is no problem at all, no dispute. It’s destined, and the throne has been created by God. Everybody is happy with the type of man coming to become Olubadan,” he said.
The President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Ajeniyi Ajewole, also hailed the development, stressing that Ladoja’s reign would bring peace and progress to Ibadanland.
“It has never happened in the history of Ibadanland for a former senator and governor to become Olubadan. His experience in politics and leadership will be of immense benefit to the city,” Ajewole stated.
In their separate prayers, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdulganiyu Agbotomokekere, and the former Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Sunday Makinde, asked God to grant the Olubadan-designate wisdom to unite the people and foster development.
Traditionalists also performed rites, including the rendition of Iyere Ifa, while Christians read Psalms and Muslims recited verses from the Qur’an.
The coronation follows the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025, at the age of 90.
