Birmingham has been heavily linked with a move for Trabzonspor central midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, according to Turkish Press, reports bcfcfollowers.com.The total deal is believed to be around the £4 million mark (4.5 million Euros), as Blues boss, Harry Redknapp looks to bolster his midfield options.
After spending four years with Lazio, Ogenyi Onazi made the switch to Super Lig side Trabzonspor last summer. The 24-year old Nigerian instantly became a regular starter and enjoyed an encouraging maiden campaign in Turkey.
However, Onazi’s future was thrown in the air after announcing via his agent that he had terminated his contract with Trabzonspor due to unpaid wages.Although his agent revoked his decision, there is clearly unwanted tension between the player, which has put his future in doubt with the Trabzon-based heavyweights.
Trabzonspor had finished 12th in the Super Lig during the 2015/2016 season, which meant there was no European football for the upcoming campaign. They also changed their manager four times and Onazi turned out to be one of the best signings of coach Ersun Yanal.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner settled well after moving from Lazio, and became a vital cog in the middle of the park, making 32 league appearances.Onazi’s strong defensive attributes – tackling and intercepting skills – helped the six-time Turkish champions finish sixth, six places higher than the year before. With the news surfacing last month that Onazi had terminated his contract with Trabzonspor due to non-payment of his salary for two months, he may take the move to St Andrew’s with both hands.
