Troops deployed to the Ochumekwu community in the Apa Local Government Area of Benue State have reportedly been attacked by suspected armed herdsmen.
Force Commander, Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, Major General Sunday Iserihen Igbinomwanhia, confirmed this to newsmen in Makurdi on Monday.
He said a soldier was killed and another injured in the attack by suspected herders.
Igbinonwanhia said the troops, in response, killed three and injured several of the herdsmen, adding that one AK-47 rifle and rounds of ammunition were recovered from them.
He said the OPWS is currently carrying out a clearance operation to flush out suspected armed foreign herders who have invaded the Kwande Local Government Area of the state.
It could be recalled that in February, a soldier was killed and two others were injured in Agatu local government when suspected herders laid ambush on the troops.
