Ooni’s Ex-Wife, Others, Must Face Trial, Gov. Makinde Insist

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has insisted that all suspects linked to the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children, must face trial, regardless of their status or influence.

The governor made this declaration on Monday during the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers held in Ibadan.

Addressing the lingering public debate over the detention of former Queen Naomi Silekunola, popular broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, and the school’s Principal, Abdullahi Fasasi, Makinde emphasized that Oyo State would uphold the rule of law without compromise.

He disclosed that several individuals have questioned the fairness of prosecuting the suspects, citing similar tragedies in Anambra and Abuja where no one was held accountable.

Responding to these concerns, Makinde stated firmly: “Even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail. Justice must be done.”

The governor clarified that while he would not oppose the court’s decision to grant bail pending trial, it is essential for the suspects to stand trial to ensure accountability and justice for the victims and their families.

Makinde said: “People have approached me, saying this incident also occurred in other parts of the country, and no one went to jail. But Oyo State is not Anambra or Abuja. No matter how highly placed the individuals involved are, justice must be done. The judiciary is independent, and it is their responsibility to ensure this process is carried out. If bail is granted, so be it, but the trial must proceed.”

The governor further reiterated that Oyo State would set an example by ensuring that justice is not only done but seen to be done, declaring, “Even if this entire country decides not to follow the rule of law, in Oyo State, we will uphold it. We will dare to be different.”

During the event, Makinde also highlighted security challenges facing the state, including the infiltration of bandits from northwestern regions.

He reassured residents of his administration’s commitment to ensuring safety and stability across the state.

Makinde said, “We will locate these criminals and deal with them decisively. I will not rest until every inch of Oyo State is free of bandits and wrongdoers.”

The governor took the opportunity to commend security operatives for their dedication and urged community leaders and residents to collaborate in addressing security concerns by reporting suspicious activities.

On workers’ welfare, Makinde assured the audience that his administration would conclude discussions on the review of pensioners’ remuneration following the new minimum wage adjustments within the week.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, praised Governor Makinde for his consistent commitment to workers’ welfare.

In their goodwill messages, labour leaders and representatives also commended the governor for prioritizing workers’ welfare and urged him to sustain his efforts.
