Osogbo Residents Lament Worsening Power Supply, Seek Urgent Intervention
Residents of Osogbo and several other communities in Osun State have raised concerns over what they describe as a steady decline in electricity supply, marked by prolonged outages and uncertain restoration periods.
Findings by OSUN DEFENDER revealed that areas such as Ilesa Garage, Oke Ijetu and Oke Baale have endured days of erratic power supply, disrupting household routines and crippling small businesses. Many residents said the situation has worsened in recent weeks.
Some locals described the outages as the worst they have experienced since 2023, when instability of the national grid became more frequent. They blamed the poor supply for declining business activities, spoiled food items and increased reliance on costly generators.
A phone charging business operator in Oke Ijetu, Tayo Adisa, said the situation had forced him to shut down temporarily. “People can no longer rely on electricity. We pay our bills, yet there is hardly light,” he said.
A teacher, Mariam Longe, lamented the impact on learning, noting that frequent outages disrupt evening classes. “We manage with candles and torches, but it affects concentration,” she added.
Responding, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company said reduced allocation from the national grid was responsible, adding that it was working with relevant agencies to improve supply and urged residents to remain patient.
