Osun And The Rampant Tax Evasion By Telecommunication Companies
  • PublishedFebruary 9, 2025

Osun State is currently grappling with a serious and pressing issue: the rampant tax evasion by telecommunications companies operating within its borders. This situation not only undermines the state’s revenue base but also poses significant challenges to governance, affecting public service delivery and overall development. It is crucial to shed light on the various dimensions of this problem and the urgent need for intervention.

Numerous telecommunications companies have shown an alarming disregard for their tax obligations, engaging in various illicit practices that undermine the financial integrity of our state. Reports indicate a range of unethical behaviors, including bribery, where Nike Aurinkolasit Circuit - 100 - Nike chuteira nike phantom venom neighborhood pack Premium 'White/White' 2025 HF2893 kickbacks are offered to government officials to bypass legal requirements. Additionally, these companies often obtain illegal approvals from inappropriate ministries, further complicating regulatory oversight. Another method of evasion involves underreporting their earnings, allowing them to pay significantly less tax than they owe. Some have even been nike air force 1 07 black cool grey racer blue white found to channel bill payments to personal accounts rather than to state revenue, effectively robbing the state of its rightful earnings. Furthermore, many companies use litigation as a tactic to delay or avoid payment altogether, hiding behind legal disputes while the state suffers financially.

The lack of action from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in response to these reported practices is particularly troubling. This inaction not only emboldens companies to continue their tax evasion but also erodes public trust in the regulatory bodies that are meant to uphold fairness and accountability. Citizens expect the NCC to act decisively to protect state interests, yet the current situation suggests a failure to do so, raising concerns about the integrity of our regulatory frameworks.

Such actions deprive Osun State of potential revenue, further exacerbating the financial challenges we face.

Compounding these issues is the NCC’s policy encouraging states to grant rights of way to infrastructure companies at a rate of N145 per linear meter. While these companies build ducts and subsequently charge telecommunications firms annual fees, this arrangement effectively robs our state of substantial revenue indefinitely. In light of these pressing issues, we urge the Council of States to engage with Osun State to address this matter collaboratively. It is imperative that we establish a comprehensive framework for accountability that ensures telecommunications companies fulfill their tax obligations. Failure to act will not only jeopardize our state’s financial health but also undermine the principles of fairness and justice that our governance system is built upon.
Together, we can safeguard our state’s financial integrity and ensure fair practices in the telecommunications sector, paving the way for sustainable development and improved public services for all citizens. It is time for decisive action to reclaim our rightful revenues and restore trust in our regulatory institutions.
