The former Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Tax and Revenue Matters, Barrister Gbenga Akano, has described the withdrawal of the case instituted against the chairman of Osun APC, Rasaq Salinsile, a former chairman of the party, Adelowo Adebiyi himself and four others as a face-saving move by the Oyetola administration.
Recall that the seven APC leaders in the state were earlier charged to court on the strength of petitions signed by loyalists and appointees of the state Governor, Gboyega Oyetola.
The APC stalwarts were accused of attempted murder, assault, and breach of peace resulting from the fracas that ensued at the sitting of the APC Ward Congress Appeal Committee on Saturday, August 14.
At the mention of the case at the Osogbo Magistrate Court on Friday, the prosecuting counsel announced the withdrawal of the charges against the accused.
Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara thereafter discharged and acquitted all the seven accused.
However, Bar. Gbenga Akano said the case was withdrawn because the prosecutors could not substantiate the allegations against them rather than in the interest of peace.
According to him, “They have nothing against us, as far as I am concerned there is no way they can substantiate the allegations made against us, the withdrawal is only face-saving.
“On the last adjourned date, the defense team asked for proof of evidence, they have not produced that as of today”.
