Osun Assembly Has No Business With Local Government Budget – APC Chieftain
•As Egbedore LG Chair Presents N6.2bn Proposed 2026 Budget
A member of the elder caucus (Igbimo Agba) of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Alhaji Gbadebo Ajao, has defended the presentation of local government budgets by local government chairmen elected under the party before their councillors.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that while the local government chairmen elected under the Peoples Democratic Party presented their budgets before the state House of Assembly, the reinstated APC council chairmen chose to present their budget before their council’s legislation.
Speaking after the executive chairman of Egbedore Local Government elected under the APC, Hon Hissa Akinwale presented the proposed 2026 budget before the local government legislative council, Ajao said the state House of Assembly no longer have business with the local government budget.
The APC chieftain said with the Supreme Court judgment, the local government Chairmen now have financial autonomy and only have to deal with their council legislatures.
He said, “Local Government is another tier of government, and we have our legislation. The first person to receive the budget will be the legislature. Why are they here? Why do we have councillors? The first set of people to receive the budget must be the legislature at the Local Government level, which is the councillors.
“That is what the chairman is presenting to them today for their consideration. If anybody else is going to do anything after that, it must have been after the legislature has already approved that thing.
“Also, the Supreme Court judgment clears everything. Financial autonomy for all Local governments. So the state has no business investing its budget again. The Supreme Court has already given its judgment. So what is the business of the House of Assembly in that?”.
Earlier, the council chairman presented a budget totalling six billion, two hundred million and five hundred thousand only (N6,200,500,000).
Akinwale said the proposal christened “Budget for Sustainable Development”, was anchored on infrastructural development, portable water, primary healthcare and education assistance.
He noted that his administration would pursue an aggressive internally generated revenue drive to complement the expected revenue from the Federal Account.
Akinwale said: “The size of the 2026 budget being presented today is six billion, two hundred million, and five hundred thousand only. The budget is anchored on infrastructural development, portable water, primary healthcare, environmental sanitation, educational assistance, youth empowerment, agriculture, security and other social amenities.
“I want to assure this Legislative house that budget discipline will be one of our core values. All expenditures and programs will strictly be based on the budget provisions as approved by this house.
“Let me state at this juncture that the successful implementation of this laudable budget lies in the support given by all and sundry in the local government.”
Responding, the leader of the house, Hon Tokunbo Bello, assured that the budget would be given speedy consideration.
“Necessary review will follow, and the budget will be given speedy consideration. The legislative arm is ready to partner with the local government executives in order to achieve the success of the proposed budget. I assure the chairman of our total support,” Tokunbo noted.
