The State of Osun House of Assembly is ready to sanction any agency that defaults the protocols or found wanton in the management of public funds.
Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Timothy Owoeye, stated this on Wednesday, during the opening session of a 3-Day Audit Inspection of Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at the Assembly Complex, Osogbo.
Owoeye said it is the constitutional mandate of the assembly to ensure the good governance of the state through effective oversight.
He explained that the exercise is not aimed to intimidate any government official, but to evaluate public projects embarked upon by government.
According to him, “Financial control is a function of House of Assembly according to the law of land.
“Sections 125,128 & 129 of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria mandate the House of Assembly to conduct auditing of public accounts in the state.”
Owoeye harped on the need for accounting officers to strictly adhere to the provisions of law, pledging the support of the 7th parliament to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration.
In his remarks, the Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Gbenga Ogunkanmi, noted that the exercise is aimed to ensure probity and accountability in the management of public accounts.
Ogunkanmi asserted that the lawmakers are interested in the effectiveness and the efficiency of the civil service, especially in the area of revenue generation.
He disclosed that a crucial aspect of a transparent system of resource allocation involves an independent assurance of the integrity of public budgeting through an audit process, and the scrutiny of its outcomes by the representatives of the people, in the form of legislature setup as public accounts committee.”
Ogunkanmi also reiterated Osun Assembly’s commitment to coordinate and perform oversight functions on how public funds are utilized as well as efficiency in the management of public finances.
