The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has continued to gather momentum ahead of the 2026 governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states, despite what party leaders describe as sustained pressure and institutional interference from the Federal Government.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the development comes amid a widening controversy over the leadership crisis within the party, which has drawn international attention following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to de-recognise the party’s NWC led by former Senate President David Mark.

The situation has sparked debate among political stakeholders, with many warning that such moves by the electoral body could impact the credibility of the electoral process if not carefully managed.

Investigations by the medium revealed that despite INEC’s decision, the ADC’s growing visibility in the South-West, particularly in Osun and Ekiti, is beginning to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections.

In Osun State, the ADC gubernatorial candidate, Najeem Salaam, has reassured supporters of his determination to contest and win the August 15 election, urging calm amid the controversy surrounding the party’s leadership crisis.

Salam, in a statement issued on Saturday, reacted strongly to the decision of the INEC not to recognise the leadership of the ADC led by David Mark, describing the development as troubling but not insurmountable.

“I wish to reaffirm, without any ambiguity, that I am fully in the Osun State gubernatorial contest to win. Our resolve is strong, our vision is clear, and our commitment to the good people of Osun remains unwavering,” Salaam said.

He called on party members and supporters across the state to remain resolute, stressing that the current situation requires unity and courage rather than panic or division.

“To all our loyal members, supporters, and stakeholders in the African Democratic Congress, I urge you to remain steadfast and resolute. This is not the time for doubt or distraction. It is a time for unity, courage, and renewed determination. Be assured that we will do everything humanly possible, within the bounds of the law, to secure victory for our great party and the people of Osun State,” he added.

The ADC candidate further criticised what he described as “shenanigans” by the electoral umpire, expressing confidence that the rule of law would ultimately prevail.

“Recent developments and the shenanigans witnessed from the electoral umpire are indeed concerning. However, let it be known that such actions cannot and will not stand. We have absolute confidence in the rule of law and the strength of our democratic institutions to correct any injustice.

“Our campaign is rooted in the collective aspiration of our people for a better, more prosperous Osun. No amount of intimidation, manipulation, or administrative manoeuvring will derail the will of the people,” Salaam stated.

He also urged supporters to remain peaceful and focused, noting that victory would come through persistence and lawful engagement.

“We call on all our supporters to remain peaceful, focused, and committed to the cause. Together, we will overcome every obstacle and emerge victorious. The future of Osun is bright, and with your continued support, victory is assured.”

Meanwhile, in Ekiti State, the ADC gubernatorial candidate, Ambassador Dare Bejide, has intensified grassroots mobilisation ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election, further boosting the party’s growing influence in the South-West.

Bejide, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada has embarked on a series of consultations and community engagements across the state, meeting with traditional rulers, youth groups and party stakeholders.

OSUN DEFENDER gathered that his campaign has also focused on local issues, economic revitalisation and inclusive governance, drawing increasing support from diverse segments of the electorate.

Stakeholders who spoke with our reporters said the growing acceptance of Bejide reflects a wider shift in political sentiment, with many voters seeking alternatives outside the dominant parties.

A senior ADC chieftain in Ado-Ekiti noted, “What we are witnessing in Ekiti is organic growth. People are tired of the old order and are looking for credible leadership. Bejide has connected well with the grassroots, and that is beginning to reflect in the level of support he is receiving.”

Another party chieftain, Mrs Bolade Ariyo linked developments in both Osun and Ekiti to a broader national realignment, adding, “Despite the challenges, including issues with party recognition, the ADC is gaining strength. The more pressure that comes from the centre, the more determined our supporters become.”

Ariyo stressed that the unfolding events in Osun and Ekiti could signal a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape, especially if the ADC succeeds in consolidating its gains and navigating the ongoing institutional and legal hurdles.
