Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun earlier on Wednesday with his entourage, visited Ifewara, a town in the state notorious for illegal mining operations.
The Governor vehemently condemned the illegal mining in the area, which according to him, has paralyzed farming activities in the community.
In a brief interview with press men at the mining site, he said there was a lot of destruction of the environment.
He said: “I have seen the extent of the destruction of the environment. It is particularly very terrible.
“The means of livelihood of the people is being destroyed. Farming is almost gone here.
“You can’t farm anything here and expect that you are going to have a kind of harvest.
“Again, there is a lot of poisonous chemicals dangerous to human being”.
Speaking further, the Governor berated illegal miners in the area, saying the benefits derivable from mining should not be at the expense of the welfare and health of the people.
Further more, Governor Oyetola reiterated his administrative resolve to protecting lives and properties of the people.
“We cannot afford the means of livelihood of our people, especially farming to be compromised, he said.
