Osun Govt Raises Alarm Over Abandoned Masts

OSUN State Government, has expressed concern over a number of telecommunications masts lying dangerously across some locations in the state.

The government lamented that the situation was capable of endangering lives and property of the people of the state if left unattended to.

A Consultant to the State Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, on Telecommunications Infrastructure, Monitoring and Compliance, Mr Rotimi George-Taylor who is the Executive Chairman of Global Transactions Nigeria Ltd, stated these in a statement made available to OSUN DEFENDER in Osogbo.

According to George-Taylor, “these abandoned masts in some places in the state, can readily become hideouts for hoodlums, vermin etc. Environmental factors weakens these masts over time and could easily lead to collapse causing destruction of lives and properties”

He enjoined the concerned and the related stakeholders to do the needful in ensuring that the abandoned telecommunications masts are cleared and repositioned for the common good of the state and its people within 21 days.

“There are one thousand and one compliance checklists for telecommunications masts as set by NCC which are sadly not being strictly adhered to.This why unfortunately, many of these masts as skewed by their owners, fall short of the set standards. As such, states within the federation are bound by the moral responsibility of being watchdogs on constant alert if they are to give their indigenes safe and healthy environments” he maintained

The Consultant then charged the people to assist the government in making the environment safe and liveable for all by shunning things that could propel environmental hazards.
