Osun LG Allocation Controversy Deepens As APC Counters ALGON Allegations

‎The controversy surrounding the control of local government accounts in Osun State has taken a fresh twist, with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-backed Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) dismissing recent allegations against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as false and politically motivated.

‎On Thursday, the Osun State chapter of ALGON, led by Sarafadeen Awotunde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accused the CBN of colluding with members of the APC to illegally open and operate bank accounts in the names of local councils in the state.

‎Awotunde, addressing a press conference in Osogbo, alleged that the scheme was confirmed during a live broadcast on ARISE TV, where APC governorship aspirant and lawyer, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), reportedly admitted that APC members were signatories to the controversial accounts.

‎He described the act as “a brazen illegality” and “an attempt to divert Osun people’s money into private and political pockets.”

‎The PDP-backed ALGON insisted that by law, only statutory civil servants such as Heads of Local Government Administration and Directors of Finance are recognized signatories to council accounts. They further claimed that the APC chairmen lacked legitimacy, citing court rulings in 2022 and 2025 that allegedly nullified their elections.

‎But in a swift reaction, Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, chairman of the APC-backed ALGON, issued a statement on Friday dismissing the PDP ALGON’s claims as “mischievous, misleading, and politically sponsored.”

‎Abiodun insisted that the APC chairmen remain the only duly recognized ALGON leadership in Osun State, citing an official letter from the national ALGON secretariat dated March 17, 2025, which recognized him as chairman.

‎He argued that their elections of October 15, 2022, had been validated by the Court of Appeal in Akure on February 10, 2025, and described any contrary judgments as “academic exercises.”

‎Defending the CBN, Abiodun described the allegations as baseless, urging the public to seek clarifications from the regulator rather than “dragging a reputable institution into political mudslinging.”

‎He stressed that the move to open direct local government accounts was aimed at ensuring autonomy and preventing state governments from hijacking council funds.

‎The APC ALGON chairman further accused the PDP government of sponsoring impostors to destabilize local government administration in the state, calling on the public to disregard their claims.

‎“The so-called PDP ALGON has no legal foundation. Their claims are built on propaganda and political sponsorship, not on any valid election or recognition.

‎“It is laughable that the same PDP that has consistently denied local governments in Osun State their constitutional rights to autonomy is now pretending to be a defender of the people’s funds.

‎“We remain the only lawful ALGON in Osun State, duly recognized at the national level. No amount of propaganda or impersonation will erase the truth of our legitimacy”.
